About Reforest Southland

Reforest Southland is a community nursery and reforestation trust, established in 2019 with the aim of bringing native flora and fauna back to the area, and promoting community growth and ecological education.

Southland's Creeks & Streams

The headwaters of three of the region’s largest rivers, Ōreti, Mataura and Aparima, flow through Northern Southland and are home to diverse and important wildlife including fish, invertebrates and birds.

Southland's Natural Heritage

Northern Southland is home to a special landscape nestled between the wetter Fiordland and Southland Plains areas, and drier Central Otago, and features rich and unique natural heritage.

Bird Life

The braided riverbeds, hills and mountains of Northern Southland provide important habitat for several special bird species.

Southland's Plant Life

Northern Southland boasts some of the most unique flora in New Zealand with several plant species that are found nowhere else in the world.

Pest Plants & Animals

While Northern Southland is a haven for many special endemic species of plants and birds, pest plants and animals are an ongoing threat and require significant elimination and/or control efforts.
